Azadeh Nasuhidehnavi

Principal Investigator

I am passionate about immunometabolic diseases, particularly in the context of cardiometabolic conditions. My research investigates how immune responses influence metabolic phenotypes, with a specific focus on chronic inflammatory infections. I primarily explore how parasitic infections impact metabolism, utilizing advanced metabolomics techniques to unravel these interactions. Additionally, I am keen on understanding how immune-metabolic responses accelerate aging in both parasitic and cardiometabolic diseases. By bridging the gap between infectious disease and aging, my work aims to uncover new therapeutic strategies to improve outcomes in these areas.

Ashley Johnson

Masters Student of Pharmaceutical Sciences

I graduated with my Bachelor’s degree in biology from the University at Albany in 2022. I am particularly interested in research involving inflammatory diseases and their increasing prevalence in today’s society, especially amongst young people. In my free time I enjoy spending time with friends and family, reading, and biking.

Troy Rought

Masters Student of Pharmaceutical Sciences

My name is Troy Rought and I am currently a Masters student at the Binghamton School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences! Before coming to Binghamton, I received my Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh in 2024. My previous research has been in antibiotic discovery and isolation, but my current research interests lie in discovering the impact of inflammation on aging and its interplay with various aging-related diseases and processes. Outside of research, I enjoy reading (mostly classics, literary fiction, and thrillers), hiking, and spending time with my friends.

Jaya Singh

Masters Student of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Hi, I’m Jaya Mahendra Singh, pursuing my Master's in Pharmaceutical Sciences from Binghamton University. I have 5 years of experience in Clinical Data Management, particularly in immunology and oncology studies, where I’ve honed my skills in data analysis, quality control, using tools like RAVE, EMR and Data management tools. Before this, I earned my Master’s and Bachelor’s in Biotechnology and researched on bacterial diversity and sustainable use of resources like temple waste, and also published them in the 'International Journal of Emerging Technologies and Innovative Research'.

Angelina Chiu

Undergraduate Student of Biological Sciences

My name is Angelina Chiu, and I’m a junior majoring in Biology with a minor in Health and Wellness. I enjoy reading a good book and biking along the bay in my free time.

Over the summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Mount Institute of Addiction. This experience allowed me to integrate my clinical research interests and wet lab skills. I observed firsthand how clinical trials can support patients struggling with opioid and cocaine addiction. In the same research lab, I observed blood processing, plasma separation, and the cellular isolation of specific samples. I’m excited to continue learning under Dr. Nasuhidehnavi, and I look forward to expanding my microbiology foundation into the field of immunology. In the future, I hope to become a laboratory technician and lead my research projects.

Princess Pokharel

Undergraduate Student of Intergrative Neuroscience

Hi, my name is Princess and my current research In the Nasuhidehnavi Lab research focuses on investigating aging-associated markers in C2C12 cells infected with Trypanosoma cruzi using qPCR.  My prior research investigated prenatal ethanol exposure effects on adolescent development and behavior.

After completing my undergraduate studies, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. specializing in neuroimmunology, with the goal of advancing treatments for autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases. In my free time, I enjoy watching comedies, rewatching Shark Tank, and spending time with my cats.

Sophia DeCesare

Undergraduate Student of Biological Sciences

I am a sophomore undergraduate student at Binghamton University studying biological sciences on a pre-veterinary track. As a graduate of the First Year Research Immersion Program (FRI), I have studied antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains, biofilm formation, and prevention methods concerning naturopathic remedies. My research interests vary from ecological factors on a large scale to microbes and other microbiology-related studies. During my free time, I enjoy crocheting, photography, and hiking or traveling to national parks.

Noah Walsh

Laboratory Technician

After graduating from Binghamton University with a BS in Biochemistry in the Spring of 2024, I applied to the Nasuhidehnavi lab to increase my research skills in preparation for graduate school. I received my honors thesis in microbiology and now rely on those skills in out cell culture experiments. I intend to begin graduate school this fall pursuing a PhD in microbiology, with a particular interest in microbiome studies. In my free time I enjoy reading, video games, and dancing, especially ballroom.
